January 17-20

Hi Families,
We have a fairly normal week planned.  Make sure to check out the list of REMINDERS at the side.  There are a lot of dates to keep track of over the next couple of months.

Here's a look at what we are doing:

Reading- The students are practicing 'fix-up strategies' this week.  When they don't know a word in the text they are reading, they can use fix-up strategies to help them understand new words more clearly.

In small groups, we will coninue to practice test preparation activities.  We have been practicing reading short passages and answering the questions by finding them in the text.  This is an important skill for them to practice because they often just want to answer quickly and move on, without checking their answers for accuracy.  This is a great skill that you could practice with them at home, as well.

Spelling- Our spelling patterns for the week are:
Rigby list-  multiple-meaning words
Prefix list- "inter-" meaning among or between
Test will be Friday.

Math- We completed our study on time last week.  This week we will be learning how to find the median (middle number), mode(most often) and range(difference between maximum and minimum) from a set of data.  We will also learn that the MAXIMUM is the largest number in a set and the MINIMUM is the smallest number in a set.

Social Studies/ Writing- We will finish the note taking portion of our research project for the International Festival.  The students are learning about their cultures by researchng the traditions, holidays, education, foods, sports, and languages.

Have a great week!
